Happy Birthday to my Blog! Come Over and Celebrate With Me!!!

Well, on Sunday I said you had to come over and visit me on Monday (yesterday) to see what I had planned for my blog's one year birthday!  I guess I was just a little anxious.  One year ago TODAY I started this little old blog.

I want to sincerely THANK each one of you for following my journey and encouraging me along the way.  I had no idea how much I would grow to LOVE this online community of support and sharing.  What a journey this year has been!  Creating my tagline for my blog – my direction for my blog – was one of the hardest things about this journey.  I knew I wanted to share what was going on in my classroom, and I wanted to share resources I had created for my classroom, but I wanted it to be a little more.  And then one night, when I was putting one of my daughters to bed for the night, I saw a picture I had made for her in her room.  “Live, love, laugh, learn”.  And that was that – I wanted to share my life, share things I love (including moments with my family), share laughs, and share learning from my classroom.  Tagline confirmed.  One year later, it is my sincere HOPE that I have met this goal.  I am so thankful to all of you who have shared in my journey – each comment and follow brightens my day.  One year ago, I had no idea I would have the opportunity to share my ideas with so many people – so again, I thank you all!  I hope you have been able to find at least a few ideas to use in your classroom, and I am so appreciative of all the tips and suggestions I have received along the way.  You guys are THE BEST!!!

Smile!

Are you looking for a reason to smile??? I know I am - I have the craziest week! Kids' soccer games last night and tomorrow night, dance dress rehearsal tomorrow (have to get off school early), dance recital Saturday, Father's Day party Sunday, report cards are due on Monday, and need to have the gr. 8 graduation slideshow finished for Tuesday (graduation night)! YIKES! Good thing my body thrives on stress ... and coffee!

Anyhow, when I saw these cute little smiles on my sister's blog, I knew I had to share them with you. She made them for her kids' first visit to the dentist (she does the cutest fun food), and I thought I would make them for my kids' upcoming visits. But I also thought they would make a fun summer snack to celebrate a happy day or special day. They could also be made for school on a day where the dentist visits, or during a tooth unit. The kids could help make them and complete a procedure writing activity. So cute!!! If you haven't seen my sister's blog already, you really need to go on over and Meet the Dubiens.

Did you read my last post where I shared about the new word I learned? Well, I actually learned TWO new words that day (feeling smarter by the second). Have you noticed my new FAVICON? (That's the new word, by the way). A favicon is the little symbol in the left corner of the page tabs for your websites. It also shows up beside the website names in your favourites or bookmarks. I love it!!! I saw the idea on Ladybug's Teacher Files - she has so many wonderful ideas. If you want to make your own (it's very easy, trust me), check out her post here.

Landscape Art Inspired by Ted Harrison

We've been studying the Canadian artist, Ted Harrison, in class. Over the past few days, my students have been creating their own landscape masterpieces, in the style of Ted Harrison. First, the students divided their page into large areas, using mostly horizontal lines. The lines should be soft and fluid. The students then filled in these areas with pastels - use a different colour for each area. Remind students that colours should be vivid and bold. Then, students outlined each area with black puffy paint. (I highly recommend this step - it really made the colours "pop"). Lastly, we mounted the pictures on larger black construction paper and folded the corners of the paper to really give it a framed appearance. The students are so proud of these art projects - they are truly museum quality (at least we think so).
